MMOs Need Some Classes Like Diablo 3's Witch Doctor

Diablo 3 just opened to everyone in the past weekend and I bet most of you had tried it. I'm not a hardcore Diablo fan but the game's beta content - a small part of the first Act still took away 5 or 6 hours of my weekend time. I'm not going to say whether the game is good or bad since i didn't go deep into every aspect. But something still came to my mind after i beat the beta with each of the five characters - MMOs need some classes like Witch Doctor(video).

In the beta, Witch Doctor is my favorite character. He's not as strong as Barbarian and he's not cooler than Demon Hunter, but a game needs this kind of character to be different, and players who want to be different would love to see this "ugly" guy. MMOs allow you to modify your character's appearance but the customization won't substantially change the look of a mighty warrior to a Dhalsim. Of course MMO should continue to make warrior look tough, assassin cunning and paladin sacred because players have accepted the concept. MMO should also offer something that, perhaps not visually appealing, but is actually distinctive.



I'll come back to Witch Doctor and talk about its abilities because ability is the key that makes it a special character. For beta, you can't unlock too many skills and runes but the skills available in beta already impressed me. Most of Witch Doctor's skills are about voodoo and necromancy. Spiders, bats, zombies and other things that may disgust you are the favorite of Witch Doctor and rotten and dead things are what you can find on his path. These abilities aren't cool for many players. But cool skills may not be necessarily shining skills, and we are talking about something new for MMOs and something different to blowing enemies, firing a fireball, stealth and backstab.
